Hello all, I still have some questions in my mind, on some of the Stage 1 discussions we've had. Here is one throw-back to what SZS brought up on the need to protect e-mail addresses against spam robots : On 25-07-99, At 05:20 AM +0100, SZS wrote: > Don't put your own email address on your pages in a > conventional form, unless you feel you are not getting > enough spam. Ironically, with Internettrash, address of a website itself has to have the site owner's e-mail address! - So, are we not increasing the risk of exposing our e-mail addresses to spam robots by the mere act of setting up the homepage with Internettrash? Of course we can (and almost all do) use Alias - but here is what "Publishing Via Email Guide" - (which is at http://internettrash.com/emailpub.html) says about the capability of an Alias in not revealing the e-mail address : >>>> USING AN ALIAS DOES NOT GUARANTEE THAT YOUR EMAIL-ID IDENTITY CANNOT BE REVEALED TO USERS! IT IS SIMPLY A HANDLE THAT YOU GO BY! IN GENERAL YOUR AREA WILL BE REFERENCED BY YOUR ALIAS INSTEAD OF YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS. <<<< What troubles me is the thought that (given that the web pages are a major target for spam robots) spammers ought to be knowing very much about this host in which website addresses are first formed with e-mail addresses and then aliased. If they can program their spam robots to collect mailto anchors, what prevents them from programing them to collect the e-mail addresses behind the aliases? Is it because collection from mailto anchors is something which cannot be legally halted, whereas in case of addresses aliased, getting the e-mail address out need actions (cracking or hacking? - whichever is the correct word!) which may be violating laws ? Will SZS make some comment on this please? K Sethu.
