"Marboxia or Bust"

Marboxian, an animated short by myself, is well underway. A shot of the little Marboxian Raider hitchhiking has been completed, and another is awaiting rendering. The UPS guy left a note saying he'd brought my new 512MB RAM upgrade but didn't find me at home today. The major landforms of the plot have been dictated into a tape recorder at 1:30 in the morning. Storyboards and sketches are multiplying in my apartment.

I'm becoming an animator.

I've recently come across another animation project on the internet, one which I'm very impressed with. Called Rustboy, it can be found at the following link....

...The image quality this man has managed to achieve is similar to stop-motion films like The Nightmare Before Christmas and the Wallace and Gromit shorts. Realism, of course, is a very difficult thing to achieve in the computer, and I applaud (and hope to learn from) his efforts.

My hope with Marboxian is to achieve the feeling of a character out of joint with his environment. Visually, this will be done (if at all) with a three-pointed contrast: those of a clean, simple, dark, colorless character (1), surrounded by realistic props (2), and placed on a curiously white, featureless ground plane (3). In the end, though, the animation will win or lose on the quality of my character-animating skills--something I consider both a frightening thought and an exciting challenge.

I know the Marboxian. I know how he thinks. I think he's an appealing hero. I enjoy working with him. God I hope this works.
