This began as a picture someone sent my sister of a pet collie fetching one of those joke arms you're supposed to hang out of your trunk as if a victim was trying to escape but instead you slammed the trunk on his arm (ha ha). My sister commented that it would look better if the arm had a bloody stump (it actually ends in a boring fold of cloth). INSPIRATION! I spent many hours lovingly lingering over that stump, trying to get just the right mangled texture and realistic soaked-in blood look on the fabric. The dog's eyes were already glassy-gold from the flash, and all that was left was to add a suitable background.
