Well, hello david, here are my thoughts:

: :My question to anybody reading this is, what do you think the fish-men would do with Finslayer and how would you suggest I get him back into the hands of the PCs.

I think that the Kuo-ton, if they are not able to destroy it, would try to refocus the power of the sword so that the whole SCP structure would get stronger. Divinity could help here. The City of the Glass Pool has quite a strong connection with Blipdoolpoolp, So, through prayer and purification rituals, they might be able to subdue the identity of Finslayer and turn the energy to their needs: stability. The player's would then have to fight for it and it would probably be kept in that evil tmeple thingy in the south east coner, maybe strentghening the kuo-ton there.

: I assume the illithids are Macchiavellian, and not stupid / loyal enough to help the aboleth whatever they do.

Maybe not.

: Finslayer is dangerous to aboleth as well as kuo-toa, so if the aboleth got wind of Finslayer they would bring it down to Shaboath and destroy it. The kuo-toa can't destroy it with the means at hand; so unless they've been prevented, they've probably told the aboleth already.

As for the first: yes, As for the second: Well, the Kuo-ton are like a servator race to the aboleth, but I do not know if they have the sense to see Finslayer for a potential threat to the aboleth. My guess is, they will look no further then their noses are long, and they aren't very long.

: But NB holds that it is actually the *mind flayers* that control the Glass Pool, and that there are no aboleth in sight. (My site puts an aboleth-run port a few miles away on the other side of the Pool, but that is firstly non-canon and secondly too far to make a difference.) The illithids are in alliance with aboleth but that does not mean the illithids all want the aboleth to win.

I know they do not all want them to win, but I've got a feeling that these Mind Flayers are more on league with the aboleth then you suggest. So now there are to possobilitries. either they let the Kuo-ton handle it in their way, or they take care of the weapon themselves ( I must admit that I haven't used this kind of thinking in my gameplay when I was playing the NB). I think the Mindflayers wouldn't bother either, They wouldn't ship it to the Great S, but hold it and maybe ship it to another plane to swap it for some very powerful other item that would darken the sun or something.

: So... do the illithids know Finslayer is among the kuo-toa or not? My guess is they would find out very quickly, given ESP and the control the illithids exert. They are likely to want any edge they can get, for the future day when the aboleth Dominate machine gets in gear.

if you read carefully, there are those who think they can wuithstand the Aboleths domination and those who think they can't. These MFs think they can, so no edge is neccasery, because afterwards they will go along in the terror that the aboleth will shed. Sure, they are their own masters and they will never admit that the aboleth are stronger then they are. But mainly they want to darken the skies and control the whole multiverse and the aboleth are more like the underground force that tries to cause domination on a lesser scale, say, a world. And when the aboleth succeed, well, then on this planet, the MFs will have a lot of ground on which they can multiply and feed and with cohorts as the ones maintaining all the discipline among those who would stand a chance to kill the MF's, there will be no threat to theit extinction on this planet. That is why they are helping. Otherwise, why should they? They wouldn't do it if they didn't think that all their work would not bring them more profit then their investments.

: It is likely that the illithids will quietly allow somebody to waylay the sword en route to Shaboath. "Somebody" probably means "derro thieves" because the illithids can then claim that dissidents did it. At this point, the PCs stand to wreck the Glass Pool - which is the illithids' best hope in this region, so far. Therefore, first, the PCs are not going to get any help if they go after the Finslayer now; and second, the illithids aren't going to want to reduce kuo-toa fighting strength (yet). This venture may work, giving this or that tribe of derro the prize; but more likely it will only succeed in delaying the sword's progress.

Well, no waylaying for me here.

: But if the PCs are successful in the Glass Pool, the illithids no longer have the kuo-toa card to play against the aboleth. But now the illithids have a new potential ally, who are stronger and smarter than the kuo-toa... the PCs. So at *that* point, necessity kicks in: the illithids will find a way of letting the PCs know where they can find the sword, and when would be a good time for a raid. In addition Ipshizeen in the Great Cavern area will now be in contact with sympathetic illithid leaders; whereas before the Finslayer was in play, Ipshizeen had no sympathisers among the illithids.

Ipshizeen is a bastard who got killed in my game by no other then Orcus... Orcus? Yes... Orcus... Why? Because Orcus killed Manzicorian in Dead Gods and I let that play out at the same time as NB. I think that it says in that book, that some priests who are very close to their God, died when their God died. I know that Ipshizeen isn't a priest of Manzicorian in the book, but I made it that wayas with all illithids that are in league with the aboleth. This was my thinking: Would Ilsensine allow for Illthids to help such another prominant Mind race when she thinks that all Mindflayers should be the true masters of the multiverse? So I thought, these Mindflayers would rebel against such an alliance, see the Illithids rebel camp. Manzicorian is the renegade God thingy among the illithids, so he would go in league with these Aboleth, gaining even more displeasure fom the real Mother Brain. Hence, war!

Well, hope these are some nice suggestions on this topic, be hearing from you!
