In 1997, then still called Natural Born Loserz, Craven begins to develop her crossover-metal. The first demo is recorded in 1998 in the Via Ritmo studios in Rotterdam. In reaction to this great demo lots of succesful gigs follow.

At the beginning of 1999 a second guitarplayer (ex-Deucemember) is added and the name is changed into Craven. The band decided to do so because they didn't feel "Natural Born Loserz" was representative of the music they made.

Later that year the city of Rotterdam selects Craven for the "Eurorock Seminar" in Duisburg, Germany. The intention of this seminar is to bring young European bands closer together. Craven plays lots of gigs during this week.

Their music could be labeled as crossover-metal. They are inspired by bands as Primus, Tool, Earth Crisis, Korn, Meshuggah, Far and Pearl Jam.
