I am a scientist. This is not because I particularly like science, merely because it is what I am best at. I really wanted to a rockstar but that ambition was hampered by an amazing lack of talent. Being a scientist I find it difficult to believe in the idea of god. The cornerstone of religion (Christianity anyway) is that we were created in god's image. Darwin's theory of evolution shows that we share the same humble beginnings with every other organism on the planet. Obviously the two ideas cannot exist side by side. This argument satisfied me for a while but recently I have begun to ponder on the matter of greater things. As I learn more about the world around us I find it increasingly difficult to understand how we can be here at all. So our body is made up of a load of molecules. Fine. These molecules are made up of a load of atoms. Fine. These atoms are made up of protons neutrons and electrons, of which electrons are the smallest components. So what makes up these? If you go back far enough there are no answers. Where did all these atoms come from. The "Big Bang" what caused that ? nobody knows, nobody can ever know. The thing about religion is that it can never be proved and equally can never be disproved. Although it is delusional to believe in something that has no basis. If I pledged my allegiance to the giant bunny men from mars and claimed I was their representative on earth people would think I was insane. But what's the difference? Neither can be proved. "But it's all in the Bible/Koran/*insert religious text* people will say. Yeah, but then when all that was written people were ill educated trapped in poverty and in any case things didn't always turn out well for the author…… Maybe in 2000 years time people will recognize me as the son of the king bunny sent to earth to prepare for his arrival. I doubt it. The deciding factor for me, however, is that if god existed we would have to be somehow better than the other animals(and plants) we share the planet with. We are not. We are destroying our habitat, our population is spiralling unchecked and every step we take to improve life creates a bigger problem. Now I'm not complaining I like my T.V, my PC, cars and mobile phones. I just realize that it will not last forever and that someday it will all come crashing down. Not in my lifetime I hope.
