Sam Raimi thinks he's bitten off more than he's ever chewed before. Along with the fact that he is the director of one of the expected movie's of the year, Spiderman, he's also worrying about the budget of the movie being $100 million.
The X-Men movie did so well, grossing $157.7 million, and their are even higher expectations for the Spiderman movie, not just from Marvel, but from the fans as well. Raimi started his career off with The Evil Dead series; Evil Dead, Evil Dead 2 and Evil Dead Army of Darkness. All three of the movies were done well considering the time they were made, but don't compare their filmography to the expectations of the Spiderman movie. Everything has changed in the film industry, as Raimi states many times. The whole crew, Maguire, Dunst, Raimi and the others are excited about their next months of life on the set of the Spiderman movie. So if they are so excited, what does Raimi fear? He fears the audience. That's right, the almighty voice of the Spidey fanboys. Their cry is heard the loudest considering the are the 99% of the audience for the movie. (The other 1% being your mom) Raimi says that never before has he gotten so many emails and letters about what he is doing as far as directing goes. Message Boards, Chat Rooms and Petitions are taking over the industry by storm, trying to convince others that Raimi should do this, or do that. Or trying to convince Raimi he should do this or that. Letters have even been mailed to Sony studios, and Raimi is a little fearful and cautious of how to direct this movie. He does not want to fail the fanboys' expectations, but at the same time, he has an invisioned dream of the finished product of the Spiderman movie that he will try to follow. He has changed many things according to the fanboys though. In the beginning, he had planned on having Spiderman flash around organic webshooters instead of those nice metal ones he created. From this, many fans wouldn't take it. They began to put up websites and sign petitions everywhere. Alas, Raimi had to change his idea of organic webshooters. So far, if you haven't been keeping up on the crew for the Spidey movie, the line-up goes...
Sam Raimi(Evil Dead) - Director
Who was turned down though? John Malkovich passed the part of Green Goblin along and publicly trashed the whole movie; Alicia Witt took an interest into the part of Mary Jane but got turned down during the first screen test; and Freddie Prinze Jr. lobbied for the role of Peter Parker but got taken out of the running soon after. Raimi's had 14 previous movies, and is taking the Spiderman movie as his first, big budget film, and is beginning to find out how hard it actually is.
