Don't Fear the Beeper

Don't Fear the Beeper

A few years ago the company I work for sent 5 of us to New York for a summer assignment. We were representing our company and had to be act professionially at all times. After a few weeks there the supervisor asked if I'd carry a beeper around Friday night and fix up anything that went wrong in the computer room. I was a bit worried because I still didn't know much about what went on but she insisted so I took the beeper. Of course that afternoon we found out about a big party going on that night. I figured I'd go to the party and stay sober since the company's computer systems were on the line. I had a beer and sipped it slowly, then I had another, drank it a bit faster and then another and another. The place was rocking and before I knew what was happening I was hammered - dancing and singing to the top of my lungs with everybody else. I checked the beeper a few times to see if it went off but after a while I completely forgot about it. I woke up the next morning with a huge part of the night missing from memory - but I did remember I was supposed to be on call. I thought, "I am so screwed if anything went wrong and they couldn't reach me". I found the beeper in my coat pocket. At least I hadn't lost it. I looked at the front of it and fell to knees with relief. Nobody had called.

I bought the beeper in to work Monday and told my supervisor there were no problems. I said it was a completely uneventful night.
