A Night in the Drunk Tank

A Night in the Drunk Tank

A few years ago a crowd of us were downtown celebrating Friday night, boozing and drinking like we often do. One thing led to another and Randy and another guy had words, they took it outside and the big fight started. Our crowd and the other guy's crowd stood around to make sure it was fair and even. Within minutes about 4 police cars showed up and Randy and the other guy were in the paddy wagon the cops were taking statements. Everyone was shouting and arguing blaming in the other guy so the cops just grabbed all of us and put us in the paddy wagon and cars and it was off the drunk tank. On the way there I asked the cop driving if he'd stop by my house so I could pick up my contact lens solution - he didn't find it funny.

When we got to the drunk tank it didn't seem half as bad as I thought. It was nice and clean; I actually stayed in worse hotels. We had to take off our shoes, coats and belts. The floor was cold so I asked for some slippers - again not funny. Then they split all of us in different cells. My cell had some real characters in it; a guy the cops beat up, several drunken bums in for the night, a guy who was bought back to the province on drug charges and lots of guys like myself - drunk and disorderly. We all sat along the wall telling our story, laughing and carrying on. Once in a while the cops would drop someone else off. My guys was yelling up and down the hall to each other. It was a pretty cool time. Eventually everybody starting falling asleep so I rolled some bum off his air mattress and drifted off too.

The next day I was thinking that instead of getting a cab back and forth downtown on the weekends I might drop the car off in front of the drunk tank, get put up for the night and drive home the next morning. I'd save the cab fare.
