I remember one time in the Sixties when our
TV went on the blink. We were desperate because it meant we would miss out
on our favourite TV show - Lost In Space. The neighbours across the road
heard about our predicament, and kindly invited my three sisters and older
brother over for dinner and a special 'neighbour's got no TV working'
viewing of that week's episode. Of course, my younger brother and I were
mortally pissed off that we didn't get an invite - I guess the neighbours
either figured we were too young, or they didn't want too many Greeves's
over. Anyway, when my siblings came back we made sure we got the full blow-by-blow
description of the episode we'd missed (FYI it was the one with Strother
Martin as a prospector and the statue that comes to life - remember it?).
It's weird how TV can sometimes have such an importance in your life.
My considered opinion about television today though is that
there's a hell of a lot of crap on it - and it's just as well! Imagine
what it would be like if there was nothing but quality programming. We'd
spend so much time watching television that we'd never have time for a life.
(Of course, the lack of quality programming has never stopped me from watching
it - as some of the examples below will no doubt attest to.) Me, I
have some favourites, new and old, and I have to admit I have followed some
to the point of obsession - like Buffy The Vampire Slayer (I absolutely
luuurvve The Buff!). But mostly, in keeping with the above opinion, I
try to watch TV in moderation. Honest (!).
One note about this list. I've included mostly long-running
serials, rather than short, one-off series. Otherwise I'd have included
things like Pride and Prejudice, Brideshead Revisited and Roots.
