Dreams

Sanctuary, 5/Jan/95

I'm with a couple of others, who's identities I don't know or remember. We're robbing a shop, or at least doing something unlawful. Then we make our escape. Problem is, we can't go home now, so we're fugitives on the run. We go to this country area of high hills and smooth slopes and wide vistas. I climb one hill and find on the other side is a sheer drop. It's pretty precarious, but a great view. We eventually get down and find som old factory or power plant out here on the edge of civilization in the middle of nowhere. We explore the plant and decide to set up a home at the end of one large corridor (the plant reminds me of an old dream of Tech school or 'Dreamschool'). We cannibalize electrical and other parts from the plant and set up three rooms by surrounding them in a red curtain material. At least one room has a bed. Although rather bare and makeshift, it's a kind of sanctuary for us from the law, a place of belonging.

The scene shifts to two trackers who are trying to find our trail. They take a path near our home, and one of the trackers discovers the covered trail leading off the main trail to our home.

The scene shifts again and I'm going along the ridge of a high green hill. Far below and to the right I can see our old power plant, which the trackers have discovered. I'm escaping again and I start to head down a steep, leafy path. The place reminds me of the Tech paddock.

I'm still on the run, but now my only companion is a girl, and we have acquired an old four-wheel drive, like my brother's. We eventually set up in a house that's again familiar from other dreams. Things are cool for a while, then one day the house is invaded by a group of the girl's friends. They're a motley and aggressive bunch, and I don't much like them. I go take the 4wd up the road and park it there, but leave it unlocked.

At this stage I realise the entire scene is set back at my parents' house, and where I've parked the 4wd is near the top of Masefield Avenue. I come back down and the girl's friends are now mostly my brother Rodney and his family. But there are others as well. Now they've acquired an old bus, which they're reinforcing with armour. It seems they're getting ready to move again, but they want to be heavily fortified against the law.

I look up the road for the 4wd, perhaps planning on leaving them, but the 4wd is gone. Someone has moved it. I begin to panic, because the 4wd means a lot to me: it's mine and the girl's only real possession.

The bus is nearly complete and the friends are now assembling various cannons and other weaponry. I look inside the bus and realise we're all going to have to live in that thing and never come out again. I consider whether jail would be a better alternative - just giving myself up. But then I consider how I'll have to have sex with all the women and girls in the group eventually, and I reluctantly accept the situation, even though I know the law or the army will easily penetrate the bus's armour.

Suddenly we hear the noise of an army convoy coming up the road, and everyone scatters. I think this was inevitable, as the friends had been conducting tests on their weapons and firing them on other houses in this suburban area.

The girl and I walk quickly up Masefield Avenue, trying to look innocent. I'm carrying a bag of our last possessions, but the girl says to ditch it, so I throw it into a neighbour's yard. The convoy behind us seems to ignore us. I tell the girl how the 4wd is gone and we set out to look for it. We see one nearby but it's not our's.

When we get to the top of the hill, below and to the left I see the 4wd obscured amongst the dark-green undergrowth. We run down to it, happy that we've found our old transport. But a cop car or military vehicle goes slowly past on the road nearby, looking for us. We hide behind the 4wd but it begins to roll backwards, and rolls over me.
