Pieter de Hooch
The Courtyard of a House in Delft
Don't know much about Hooch, apart from he's Dutch - oh, and Jock O'Connell probably would've called this a 'genre' painting. I stumbled upon this painting in the British Gallery and kept coming back to look at it. The inscription in the wall above the door says something about 'meekness' for those who enter. Humble, simple, fantastically detailed. I really like the diagonal lines and the gaze between the little girl and the woman.
