I recently read Lord Of The Rings for the second time in my life. The experience was even more enjoyable and obsessive than that first time when I was 17. And this being the 'internet age' I of course checked out some of the Tolkien sites to feed my obsession. But it wasn't enough. I decided I just had to do something of my own in tribute to Tolkien and Lord Of The Rings: therefore this site.
Hopefully the title is self-explanatory (if not very 'pc'), but a few extra words may be helpful. One of the things that decided me on doing a Tolkien site was the opportunity it afforded me to include some of those beautiful old rustic runes and elvish Tengwar fonts that I admired in many of the Tolkien sites, and that conjure Tolkien's world. Another was the chance to indulge in some playful photo manipulation, care of good old Photoshop. As a person who 'can't draw', I enjoy being able to pretend I'm an artist - with the help of the special effects features that Photoshop provides. I'm also a keen observer of popular culture, and I love to mix references together. Then there was the news of the live action Lord Of The Rings film presently in pre-production in New Zealand. That got me wanting to see, perhaps in preparation for the film, fairly realistic renderings of what the characters and Middle Earth might look like - instead of yet more artist's illustrations. But most of all, in doing this site I wanted to put into Tolkien's world something that has too often been missing: namely, a little bit of sexuality.
Now, I have no problem with Tolkien's portrayal of relationships, and particularly women, in Lord Of The Rings. The women are all pure and - as far as we know - virtuous (when they're mentioned at all), and the men are noble and true; and that is probably as it should be in Tolkien's world. But I can't help thinking that Rivendell must have been filled with nubile elf babes and strong-limbed young elf men swimming in the Bruinen, that Tolkien didn't tell us about (why do you think Bilbo lingered there so long?). And don't even get me started on Lothlorien! Anyway, I'll bet that there is much serious discussion in Tolkien mailing lists along the lines of 'Who is the hottest babe in Lord Of The Rings?' I imagine, with the popularity these days of shows like Xena and Buffy, the kick-ass Eowyn usually wins that title.
So I hope you enjoy my little site. Please remember, it's not to be taken too seriously.
