Cloud Factory - The Clouds
|

The Clouds were a supremely talented Australian band that
never quite made it big. Heavily influenced by, among other things,
indie greats The Pixies, comic books and classical mythology, they had in
Jodie Phillis (guitar, centre of pic) and Patricia Young (bass, right of
pic) two frontwomen who shared angelic harmonies and exceptional songwriting
ability. Cloud Factory, written by Phillis, was their first single and came
out in 1991. It was a deft, soaring pop song about environmental consciousness
(or the lack of it) and immediately made the band darlings of the Australian
indie crowd.
In 1997, after too many years without mainstream recognition, playing seemingly the same venues every time, and the release of an album (Futura) that they weren't completely happy with, they played their final shows. They ended each show with Cloud Factory, the song that had started it all for them. Cameron Adams, writing about that final Melbourne concert in Beat magazine at the time, called it "one of the finest pop songs this decade." How true, how true... Like the Go Betweens, I have yet another sad (it's really more ridiculous than sad) story about me and a girl that relates this time to The Clouds, but I won't bore you with it here (for that, go to Poems and check out the lyrics for 'I'm Cold'!). Just download the song, and enjoy! You'll be singing along with me - "In the sky...." |
