Thursday the 19 (June, 1862)
well this morning I am bidding goodbye to
Petersburt and am not sorry - there is 5 of us going with one wagon - well
we went 14 miles that day - we had a good time of it - we stopped and got
some ice at a ice house and we carried it till the next day so we had some
cool water as we went along - we stayed at a private house - I got supper
and breakfast with them and it was good fare for certain
Friday the 20
today we went 22 miles and had but 6 more
to go - well tonight I felt unwell and did not eat anything
Saturday the 21
this morning I feel some better - I ate some
breakfast this morning - there was a 2 horse carriage came along and 2
of us got into it and rode to Newcreek station in it so it rested me right
smart - well we have got here and got our tent up and I am writing this
in it - this is a right nice place and we have a good place to camp - well
I must quit writing for it hurts my breast
Sunday the 22
this is a beautiful day - I am lying in my
tent the most of the time - nothing of importance today
Monday the 23
this is a warm day - we are going to start
in a day or two - our Regiment has come in this evening - I am not much
better yet
Tuesday the 24
this is a warm day - we have orders to leave
this evening but we have not got off - we do not have nay news of any reliance
now - we hear news enough if we could rely on it
Wednesday the 25
this is a warm morning and we are waiting
to load up our things and I do not expect that we will get off much before
night - if then - there is about 3 or 4 Regiments to go before we can start
so it will be late before we can start - well I must quit writing for this
time for I have nothing of much importance to write at this time - I am
not any better yet - I am tolerable well in the morning but in the afternoon
I feel very bad - I am not fit for duty at all and I m going to try and
get a discharge if I do not get better - I feel as though my constitution
was broke - this evening we started on the train and got to Martinsburg
at daylight on Thursday and laid over on Thursday and on Friday and on
Saturday we started to Winchester and stayed all night 6 miles above Martinsburg
and on
Sunday the 29
we went through Winchester and on Monday we
get to the Army at Strasburg and - - on
Tuesday the July the (July, 1862)
I got a furlough for 25 days - my health is
very poor
Wednesday the 2 day of July
well I had to go down to the post hospital
and had to be examined by a board of Physicians and when I got there my
furlough was not drew up right or the surgeons certificate was not right
so I was out - well it was raining hard and I did not know what to do so
I went back to the hospital and one of the doctors came up to the tent
and told me to get ready to go to Winchester and from there we were to
go to Baltimore to the hospital there - well I got in a wagon and went
on to Winchester - we got there about sundown and got a house to stay all
night at and we drew rations for supper and breakfast
Thursday the 3
well this morning we started at 7 O'clock
AM and got to Harpers Ferry about 12 O'clock at noon and we are waiting
here for the trains going West to pass us so I do not know whether we will
get off much before dark or not and perhaps not then - there is about 2
hundred of us on the train - we are all able to walk - well I could have
got a got a discharge as easy as I could have got a furlough if I have
had my papers made out for a discharge - if my health does not improve
in a month more I shall get a discharge from the Army for good - but I
think that I am getting better now - well the reason that we are all sent
away is they are looking for the Rebels to attack our forces on the valley
for as soon as Richmond is taken the Rebels will come back to the valley
and try and take possession of it but I do not think they will do that
- we had a very nice trip down from Winchester to Harpers Ferry - the cars
went very slow - the track is made of wood and a bar of iron laid on the
sill of wood so it is a poor sort of road - the country is very nice but
not so nice as it is from Martinsburg to Winchester - that is as nice a
country as I have ever seen in all my life - there will be not less that
one hundred thousand bushels of wheat in this country that will not be
harvested at all for the owners are Rebels and they have fled from their
homes - well I have nothing of much importance to write today so I will
qit for this time - well we started from Harpers Ferry at 8 O'clock PM
and got to Frederick City about one O'clock AM - we
were disappointed about going to Baltimore very much - well I had to
set on the buffer of the cars all the way and when we got to the city I
got off of the cars and made my bed on a plank pile and slept till daylight
- when I got up all the boys were gone.
Friday the 4 day of July
we went up to the hospital on the hill and
was ordered back again to another hospital but did not get in so we had
to go back on the hill to the barrack and I am staying there with some
few of our boys but we are very much crowded - well this was a dull 4 -
there was a small procession and a bross band which made good music - well
I am getting better I have a good appetite and feel much better than I
did
Saturday the 5
well this is a fine day and it is going to
very a very hot day - well we have good times - we have good light bread
and some butter and tea and coffee - we get some ale - the Sisters of Charity
are attending on the sick all the time - they are very kind to the sick
Sunday the 6
this is a warm day - yesterday evening I went
out to interment of 2 soldiers that died on Friday evening - they were
both interred in one grave - well I got a pass at one O'clock PM and took
a fine walk over the city this evening - it is a nice town - very healthy
and clean

this is a very warm day - well there is a
large number of sick in the 5 different hospitals - there is 4 in town
besides this one - there is from 10 to 12 hundred sick in all - this is
the principal one - they get their prescriptions filled here except one
and they have medicine of their own
Tuesday the 15
there is still warm weather - well there is
2 large stone buildings here that was built in 1774 by the British - they
built them for a hospital then and they are as firm as ever and will perhaps
last as long as time lasts - they are built of limestone and are 2 stories
high and one or 2 fireplaces to the room - they have a narrow double porch
and they have stairs to go up outside
Wednesday the 16
we had a fine rain this evening - well they
are building more hospitals here - they are going to more all the hospitals
here as soon as they can
Thursday the 17
this has been a fine day the rain we had last
evening had made the air cool and nice - we have not war news of any importance

the city of Richmond - well it is raining again tonight

- it caused a great excitment in the hospital
