Saturday the 17 (May, 1862)
this is a nice day - the mud is drying up
- there is about 30 or 40 thousand troops here now - there is troops from
nearly every Northern state in the Union
Sunday the 18
this is a nice day but it is raining at noon
- the troops were very lively this morning - the Brigade Bands were chanting
their legs all morning - it made me think that I was in a large city and
almost forgot that I was in a Army - well I must write a letter home today
- we have short fare yet but we are getting along quite well considering
everything
Monday the 19
this is a pleasant morning and it fine growing
weather - we still have short fare - this morning we had nothing but coffee
and some beef - it seemed hard but we had to put up with it - well at dinner
we had soup and coffee at supper we had one cracker apiece and beef and
coffee - we have no news today of importance
Tuesday the 20
today we are to get our pay - well this morning
we had coffee and beef and some of us had some of our last nights cracker
- I had part of my cracker to eat this morning - so I had as much as I
could eat for my appetite is not good - there is a large number of wagons
on the road but the river was so high that they could not cross - but we
look for them today but they did not come today - well this evening we
had a detail for a scout - there was 15 men out of every company in our
Regiment - well I was detailed for one - we went over but was ordered back
till tomorrow
Wednesday the 21
this has been a rainy night - we had nothing
but coffee and beef this morning - we were ordered over to headquarters
at nine O'clock but we had to come back till 12 O'clock - well the crackers
had come at last - the boys has went and broke open a barrel and are helping
themselves - for my part I can wait till they are issued out - but we will
get some soon for we have to go at noon and we will draw 2 or 3 days rations
- well I must quit - find some coffee for we will soon start - well we
did not start till about a half hour before sundown - we got a cracker
and a half to scout
on for 2 days - well we set out on our tramp and got 4 miles and it
rained so hard that we had to stop at a vacant house - I was not sorry
for we had to wade the creek 2 and the water was so cold that I took a
cramp in my legs so bad that I could not hardly stand it - we had a hard
tramp that night - the road crossed the creek about 12 times in the 4 miles
- we crossed on logs all but 2 and we had to wade it - then when we got
to the house there was 2 German soldiers there that had been out on a turn
and had got lost and they put up there for the night - when they heard
us
coming they thought we were Rebels and went upstairs - we hollered
for them to come down - they were afraid to come down for fear we would
capture them - we struck a light and soon found out who they were - well
we were so wet that the water draining off our clothing wet the floor so
bad that we did not have a place dry to lie on - I got a narrow bench and
put it by the wall and turned in on it - we got up at daybreak and started
on over the North mountain - we got over on the other side and stopped
at a house and got some milk to drink with our crackers - and then we went
on down to a village called Circleville - I got my dinner there and the
rest of the boys went on up on the mountain which is called Spruce mountain
- they came back that night - the next day which is
Friday the 23
I went with them on the mountain to what is
called the hunting ground - we went till we got on the top - we were sinding
our way along the hill and bushwhacker fired on the last man that passed
along and shot his thumb through and through the bone - broke both bones
of it and shot through his index finger - both of the right hand - well
we did not get to see him at all - we went on and scouted through the woods
till about 4 O'clock PM and I went and got some dinner and returned to
the village
we did not do anything this day Saturday the 24
the most of the boys went back to the hunting
grounds today again but I stayed at the village - they came back tonight
again without doing anything
Sunday the 25
this is a lovely morning - I am detailed to
go on picket today - we are going down the river to the first farm - well
it is a nice place to stay on picket - well we stayed till night and then
we went up to town - well I went to bed early tonight and slept well
Monday the 26
well this is a cool morning - we are going
back to Franklin after dinner - well I have boarded myself every since
we came here - I have spent over $2.50 since I came here - well we started
after dinner - Col Latham came here he - he had better luck than we had
- he captured several of the Rebels and took a number of guns - we got
to Franklin about sundown to find all the Army gone towards Newcreek excepting
the sick and wounded and one company of the 60 Ohio Regiment - I felt lonesome
and sad to think that the poor sick and wounded must be left here
perhaps to die - or if they get well to fall into the hands of Rebels
Tuesday the 27
this morning the Ohio company left - there
was 3 dead men in town this morning - we have to wait till a train of wagons
comes to take away as many of the sick and wounded as will be able to go
- this has been a gloomy day for me - I visited the hospitals today and
I did feel sorry for the poor fellows that are here - they have had nothing
hardly to eat and no medical attention worth naming - well this evening
the train has come in - I am glad for we do not know what hour the Rebels
will come in - I feel very unwell this evening but have to go on picket
- well they want to
start at daylight - well I was so unwell that I had to leave the post
about 12 O'clodk - I went down - the boys had just got into camp from going
out to see what the Cavalry thought to be a Secesh camp - they thought
they seen a fire about 2 miles above the town but it was a mistake - at
3 O'clock we were ordered up to fix for starting - I felt very bad indeed
- I could hardly stand up on my feet but I had to do it
Wednesday the 28
we got started about 8 O'clock - we have left
a large number in the hospitals - I am sorry for them - there is Post Surgeon
and a assistant and nurses with them - we took the most of the Government
goods - we got a box of shoes - I got a very good pair of them - well I
made out to walk about 6 miles and had to get into a wagon and ride till
night - well we made 21 miles today - I feel very bad today
Thursday the 29
this morning I am quite weak and feeble -
I have not taste for anything - I drank some coffee and ate some crackers
and some beef but it had no taste to me - well I walked on ahead of the
wagons as it was very cool - I went on about 6 miles and got into the wagon
again - we got to Ginterburg about 11 O'clock AM - I felt quite bad indeed
- I learned that we would not leave there for five days - that is the sick
would not - I went to a house and got a piece of bread and butter and a
cup of coffee - it had some taste - as I started over to camp which is
West of town I bought a pie and some good sweet milk - it tasted better
than anything I have eaten for 2 days - this evening all he boys are going
in the direction of the Army - well this evening I am a little better -
I eat some ham and light bread - it tasted very well - well I went to bed
early and sweat freely and rested well
Friday the 30
this morning I feel better - I eat considerable
breakfast - we heard that our Regiment is nine miles North of Moorefield
- that is the county town of this county - well my health is still better
- I have a good appetite this evening - it is raining right smart this
evening - well we all turned in - that is Company E - I am staying with
them - we got in a good sleep when it rained so hard that it was ankle
deep in the tent - I got up in time to keep my clothew dry - well I did
not get to sleep much more till daylight - I laid out by a fire and dozed
a little

position

up fast - well I reported myself to the surgeon - I had to wait till noon
before I could get to see him - they took me in as a assistant apothecary

at the hospital boarding house - our fare is short - we have beef and hard
bread and coffee
Saturday the 7
this is a warm day and we have a good deal
of work to do - we have about 6 or 7 hundred sick to prescribe to all the
time - well this evening we had a exciting time of it - there was 4 or
our troops taken prisoner - they had went over the river to stay about
one mile from town - some of them were sick and went out there to stay
till the got well - we were expecting the Rebels to come in and take the
town but they did not come - we did not sleep much - I went to bed about
12 or one O'clock so I did not get much sleep
Sunday the 8 of June

good thing for us that the Rebels did not come in for our force was not
very strong - this is a beautiful day and the wind is cool and nice

in the rain on Tuesday - my blanket got very wet and I had to lie in it
all night so I took a chill and have not been well since - I suppose we
will all leave here in a day or two - the sick are going every day - I
