but I am afraid that I will not be able to stand the fatigues of the Regiment
for my chest is not any better than it has was when I cam here - but I
am willing to go and if I can not stand it - why they will have to discharge
me - well I suppose that I will not leave here for 2 days for they said
that I might stay 2 days longer as I wanted to write some letters and wanted
to get some things out of town - will I must quit and go to writing my
letters though I feel very low spirits this morning and somewhat discouraged
Thursday the 21
this morning I have orders to get ready at
one O'clock to start - well we started at 2 O'clock and when we got to
the Washington junction and they had no train to go to Washington so we
went on to Baltimore city so we had plenty to eat and at ten O'clock in

there all day Friday the 22 and on

hill above the city and stayed all night
Sunday the 24
we do not know whether we will leave her today
or not - we have orders to go to the depot at 8 or 9 O'clodk but whether
we go or not - but I hope we will go - well I have had a pleasant trip
- I went into the Capitol and enjoyed a good deal of nice scenery and did
not begrudge my trip - well I do not think that I will be able to march
when I do get to the Regiment so I am going to try and get my discharge
when I get there - we were ordered into line and all that was not able
were to stay - they said that I should not go so I concluded to stay -
well the squad went down to the
depot and had to come back
Monday the 25

City on Sunday the 6 of September with a force of about 30 thousand men
- the citizens of Frederick was warned of their approach in time to get
the hospital stores removed - or the most of them - I have not learned
what become of the sick and their attendants but I suppose they were paroled
- the report is now that the Rebels have left Frederick and gone towards

we heard this morning that the fight was on
the Baltimore and Ohio railroad but we have not heard the particulars of
it yet - some of the soldiers are looking for the Rebels in here - one
night about a week ago the whole force was ordered to go out on picket
- the report was that the Rebels had drove our pickets into camp - the
Rebels worsted our Army at Manassas fight - our force had to retreat and
it is said that the panic was ten times worse this time than it was last
June a year ago - we lost some men out of our Regiment but I have not hear
how many - there was one youn man killed out of our company - his name
was James Kerns - he was a fine man - he was killed on
Saturday the 30 of August at the first days fight - he was killed by
our own guns - they were ordered out to support the battery and they were
