from West's of Duck Creek: Gusman
p. 87 Jerome Gusman:
Luther and Adaline Washburn decided to sell out and move to Kansas, near
Topeka , where some of [Luther's] cousins lived.  This took place in 1896 when they
sold the big house and farm on Gold Rush- 176 ¾ acres for $5,833.  It sold
to Joseph A Snider and the neighbors at the time were the Burnsides, William
Hacker, Leeman Maxwell, Jerome Gusman and A. Meyers.

pp. 16, 31, 77 Joseph Gusman:
Mills and dams were regularly being proposed along the West Fork River. In 1819, millwright Nathan West was appointed to a jury in Harrison County Court to view and report on a site for a grist mill and dam below Hackers creek (Harrison County misc. records, vol 1,page 100, Dec 1819).  The jury concluded that the water would back up about three miles, land would not be flooded and so permission was granted  John Patton to build what was to be better known as the Joseph Gusman Mill.

William Patton, per Harrison County Deed book , Vol. 12 , page 19, Feb 14, 1814:
(John Patton) bought 145 acres in two tracts further so. towards Hackers Creek. A mill as built on this land about 1819 by John Patton Jr. which was later operated by Joseph Gusman.

from Old Grist Mills of Harrison County:
Darius Hinkle, according to local lore, had earlier deserted a sweetheart
with grievous results.  When growing up, he was friendly with Cassandra
(Cassie) Cheuvront, youngest daughter of the well known Rev. John Cheuvront,
a Methodist minister.  Their homes were not far apart along the West Fork
River in the area near the mouth of Duck creek.  After the Rev. Cheuvront
died, Cassie became close to the Joseph Gusman family.  Darius and Cassie
frequently were together at the Gusman Mill on the West Fork river  would go
boating together on  the millpond and were observed to be close friends.
For some reason, Darius stopped seeing Cassie who was heart broken. She was
said to have heard - incorrectly - that he had married.  She left a letter
for Joseph Gusman and one night drowned herself in the pool below mill dam.
--Old Grist Mills of Harrison County,1940, by Harvey W. Harmer, p. 117, and the poem entitled "Cassie", from Howard VanScovy's  Book of Poetry,  p. 77.
