The following "Brief History of the Melburn Cookman Family" is not intended to be complete.  Neither is it guaranteed to be accurate--since so much of it has been written from notes and memory.
Much of this material is from notes taken on June 28, 1969--15 pages in all--during an all day session with my uncle Claget Cookman.  During this session he related events, names, and dates.  All I did was to put it together in order that it not be lost in the cobwebs of time.
Thanks to all who supplied names, dates, and information.
My special thanks to my daughter, Shirley Cheuvront Ericson, for her help in sorting, cutting, and editing the "mass" into something readable.
J. Howard Cheuvront,
July 1, 1972

[Editor's note: J. Howard's text begins with Parker B. Cookman in 1823.  I have added earlier information gathered with the help of many, many genealogy friends who are also researching Cookman and Cheuvront surnames, and my additions appear as highlighted text.]
