Self Indulgent Fantasy
If you could invite at least ten people to dinner from ancient or contemporary history (they can be real or fictional characters), who would they be? This question is a great ice breaker and it lets you know a bit about the person who answers. The whole point of this is to make you think and keep in mind, your significant other, family, and friends are a given. Please send me your fav all time people list CLICK HERE :). I had some fun with this list (it's not listed in any particular order) and I hope you have fun with it, too, after all that's the whole point.
- Various Beautiful Women - They say start with beauty, right :)!? I'm thinking of Cheryl Ladd, Betty Weider (may be the most beautiful woman I've ever seen), Salma Hayek,
Angie Dickinson, Tina Louise, Julie Newmar, Cyd Charisse, Elizabeth Montgomery, Uma Thurman, Jackie Zeman.
The only problem about having these lovely ladies here would be if the other guests starting picking up on them. If we're going to include a group of beautiful women, there is always The Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders, The Raiderettes, Playboy Bunnies, or the Hee Haw Honies (if someone could send me pictures of the Hee Haw Honies, esp. Linda Thompson, I'd be eternally grateful). Addendum: It's interesting to note that most of us Anglo-Saxon jingoist male types have a very "Westernized" concept of beauty. This is a big mistake, IMO, because woman from India and the Middle East have unrivaled beauty. Don't believe me? Check it out Here or Here.
- Jesus - Jesus may be the most controversial individual on this list. He seems to inspire the best or the worst in people. Why? What did he really say?
- Someone witty like Mark Twain , Oscar Wilde , Voltaire ,
Jim Carrey, or Robin Williams - Hey, there would have to be some levity at this dinner. Just think of all of these guys together -- what a blast.
- A reformer of some sort, either Bartolome De Las Casas, Gandhi, Malcolm X or David Duke - Bartolome De Las Casas was a pre-Reformation Spanish Dominican priest (circa early 1500's)
who protested and actively fought vs. Spain's exploitation of the Indians. Gandhi and Malcolm X you probably know -- to learn about David Duke read his book "My Awakening."
- Emmanuel Swedenborg - Talk about a great, visionary mystic and eclectic mind. Wow!
- Dynamic authors - Unsurpassed Marcel Proust, Sagacious and seminal R. A. Schwaller de Lubicz, Eloquent and profound Erich Remarque, Visonary Dante, Surreal, enigmatic James Cabell, Imaginative J.R.R. Tolkein, Mystical Herman Hesse, Adventurous Ernest Hemingway , Visionary Jules Verne, Humorous Sherman Alexie,
Insightful Henri David Thoreau, Spiritual Dan Millman, whimsical Allan Weisbecker, Myth oriented Jean Bolen, Making politics fun L. Neil Smith, Traveling Peter Jenkins, Witty Steven Harrison, Profound John Anthony West, Tough yet poignant Charles Bukowski, and the Enigmatic, eloquent beatnik Jack Kerouac.
- Directors - Ingmar Bergman, Akira Kurosawa, Edgar Reitz, Jean Cocteau, Godfrey Reggio, Woody Allen, Fredrico Fellini, Jacques Tati, Satyajit Ray, Leni Riefenstahl, Marcel Pagnol, Andrei Tarkovsky, Ozu Yasujiro, Wim Wenders, Alfred Hitchcock, Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, Oliver Stone, and Hal Hartley - IMO, these are the greatest movie directors.
- Peter Lorre - Hey don't knock it, he's my favorite actor -- arguably, Peter Lorre was the greatest "character actor" of all-time.
- Shakespeare and Francis Bacon - I'd want to ask them, "OK, who really wrote all those plays?"
- Albert Einstein or Nikolai Tesla - Talk about brilliant, seminal thinkers.
- Philosophers - Either Soren Kierkegaard, Socrates, Plotinus, Albert Camus,
Jean Paul Sartre, Frank Zappa,
Marcus Aurelius, Pythagoras, Lao Tzu, Friedrich Nietzsche, Heidegger, Derrida, Arthur Schopenhauer, George Santayana,
or Baruch Spinoza - The conversation would be riveting and fascinating especially with Frank Zappa in the mix (yes, I really do believe Frank Zappa was philosopher among other things *g*).
- Johann Heinroth - This guy was supposedly the founder of Psychiatry one century before Freud! Yet, little is known about him.
- Ts'ai Lun - Ts'ai Lun was an official in the Chinese Imperial court circa 100 A.D.. Most people know nothing about this man, for example, he invented paper (bet you didn't know that).
- Historical Women of Note - Sacagawea,
Mary Wollstonecraft, Madame de Stael,
or Simone de Beauvoir - Sacagewea seemed to have a great soul and I'd want to ask her why she married a worthless idiot like Charboneau.
The latter three were philosophers.
I admire these women for their minds, too! Shock of shocks! You mean a man can admire a woman for her mind! Yeap, pretty cool, huh?
- Either Alfred Adler, Viktor Frankl, Thomas Moore,
Carl Rogers, or Carl Jung. - I love Psychology and I greatly respect all of these men. No link for Thomas Moore yet, if you find one please Let Me Know.
- Kokopelli or Eris - Just for the hell of it, Kokopelli according to Native American tradition is the "trickster" and Eris is a legend based on the Roman goddess of chaos.
- Adam and Eve - Before the Fall. Might be hard getting clothes on them. Would the dinner conversation corrupt them?
- Michael Moore & Jim Hightower for cutting and humorous political, social commentary.
- Leonardo Da Vinci - He could paint a massive mural of all of us gathered at this dinner. Throw in Escher, Goya, Bosch, Van Gogh, Pablo Picasso, and Salvador Dali for some added texture.
- Abraham Lincoln and Thomas Jefferson - Forget that they were Presidents, I'd want to pick their brains.
- Classical Music Composers - Mozart, Beethoven,
Bach, Handel, Vivaldi, and Claude Debussy - Let them argue about who's the greatest -- it's a toss up to me.
- Steve Allen - This list is entirely his fault (I remember watching "Meeting of the Minds" TV show when I was a kid). Mr. Allen was definitely an eclectic, modern day "Renaissance Man." I was saddened to hear about his recent departure, truly, Mr. Allen you were a genius.
- Various favorite athletes Bruce Lee, Joe Frazier, Muhammad Ali
, Sugar Ray Robinson, or Prefontaine.
- Frankenstein - Imagine trying to teach him to eat with chopsticks.
- King Solomon - This guy had it all wisdom, unmatched wealth, power, authority, spirituality, etc. I'd want to ask him, "Considering that you had it all, how could you blow it?"
- Black Sabbath, Yes, Miles Davis, Louis Armstrong, Pink Floyd, John Coltrane,
Bob Marley, Ravi Shankar, Frank Sinatra, Diana Krall, and Various Classic Motown Artists (esp. Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, The Spinners, and The 4 Tops) - Have 'em take turns in performing along with the various classical music composers listed in #21 above.
