Survive That Pesky Jail Sentence, Speak ‘Prison-ese’



PORT TOWNSEND, Wash. (Wireless Flash) – Did you know when jailbirds talk about “Cadillacs” they might actually be talking about cigarettes? That’s according to Prison-ese: A Survivor’s Guide to Speaking Prison Slang (Loompanics Unlimited), a new book of prison terms collected by ex-con author Gary K. Farlow. Other slang words straight from the slammer include the term, “Colonel Klink, which isn’t a Hogan’s Heroes reference, it’s “prison-ese” for a high ranking correctional officer. “Honeycomb Hideout” might sound like a 1960s psychedelic rock band, but it actually means solitary confinement. And finally, if a prisoner says he has gas, don’t be too quick to plug your nose. “Gas” is prison slang for batteries.
