The ‘Beet’ Goes On For Vienna’s Vegetable Orchestra

VIENNA, Austria (Wireless Flash) – Music fans in Vienna, Austria, are vegging out to a whole new “beet”: An orchestra that turns vegetables into musical instruments. Members of the First Viennese Vegetable Orchestra are accomplished at instruments like the carrot-flute, pumpkin-harp and leek violin. Spokesperson Matthias Meinharter – who plays a trumpet carved out of a cucumber and a bell pepper – says the Vegetable Orchestra plays everything from marches to African music. Then, after the orchestra is finished, a chef turns the instruments into soup for the audience. Instrumentation varies depending on the seasons. For instance, now that it’s hard to find a pumpkin big enough to be a bass drum, the Vegetable Orchestra is creating techno grooves with cucumbers and carrots.
