New Zealand Mayor Wants To Get Rid of ‘STD’

South Taranaki District, New Zealand (Wireless Flash) – What’s in a name? Plenty if the initials are S.T.D. Currently, the tiny town of South Taranaki District, New Zealand, is known by locals as “S.T.D.” – which also stands for “sexually transmitted disease” – and mayor Mary Bourke thinks it’s time for a name change. No one has accused S.T.D. of being a V.D. hotbed but Bourke is convinced the initials transmit a negative image. She says changing the name to “South Taranaki” would give a better initial impression than the current name. The South Taranaki District Council will vote on the final name change in May and Bourke admits she’s worried that a growing number of citizens prefer the old name.
