Alfred E. Newman: ‘The Modeling World is a Cold, Ugly Place’

MONTREAL (Wireless Flash) – Being a model isn’t as glamorous as you think – just ask Alfred E. Newman. Well, actually, ask journalist Ian Halperin, who recently went undercover as a professional model named Alfred E. Newman to research a new book, Bad and Beautiful (Citadel). Halperin worked as a model for over a year and says it’s not a pretty picture. In fact, he says it was “horrifying.” During his investigation, he saw a 15-year-old female model inject heroin under her toenails minutes before hitting the runway. He also saw lecherous agents feeding naive teenage models roofies and cocaine in exchange for sex, and legions of young hopefuls vomiting and gobbling drugs to stay waif-like. Another thing he saw was stupidity. Halperin claims not one person he met recognized his name as the mascot of Mad Magazine.
