Shamu Soon to be Grandfather

SAN DIEGO (Wireless Flash) – Shamu the killer whale is about to become a proud grandfather. Keepers at SeaWorld in San Diego say Shamu’s daughter is pregnant and expect her to give birth to a bouncing baby killer whale as early as this month – making this Shamu’s first grandchild. The birth will be a triumph for SeaWorld because the wee whale will be only the second killer whale calf born through artificial insemination. The first was it’s mother – Shamu’s daughter – 11-year-old Takara. Whale handlers won’t know the sex of the whale until it’s born, so they haven’t picked out any names. A SeaWorld spokesman says a normal killer whale pregnancy lasts 17 months, and the calf weighs upwards of 400 pounds.
