Thrift Store Painting Museum Brings in the Alternative Set

LOS ANGELES (Wireless Flash) – Want to get your hip, cynical teen interested in art? Make sure it comes from a thrift store. That’s at least what one L.A.-based art collector is saying about the online gallery of paintings he’s painstakingly collected from thrift stores across the country. Fred Beshid says his MuseumOfFred.com website is very popular with the irony-loving alternative set who love the cheap and cheesy motel-style paintings featuring sailing ships, pets and portraits. He says when he does gallery shows with his collection, it’s even more popular – but he has yet to sell a painting. That’s no problem for Beshid, who says he’d feel weird about selling any of his collection. And even if he succeeds in his dream to open up an actual gallery of thrift shop paintings, he has no plans to give up his day job – construction work.
