Woman’s Studies Professor: ‘Don’t Glamorize Pimps!’

PORTLAND, Ore. (Wireless Flash) – Think it’s fun to dress up in wacked-out 1970s pimp clothes like afro wigs and bellbottoms? Well, you may contributing to murder, according to a woman’s studies professor at Portland City College in Oregon. Patricia Barrera teaches a class called “Understanding Prostitution” and she says people who think pimps are cool and funky are contributing to the problem. Barrera says glamorizing the pimp life just makes prostitution seem like less of a crime and leads to more women getting into it. And the terrible part is, she says, one of the main ways women get out of prostitution is by dying. Barrera also says that the pimp clothes aren’t the only problem. She thinks movies like Pretty Woman and even Disney movies – which she claims sexualize children – are just as bad. “Understanding Prostitution” starts Wednesday (April 3)
