CHRISTMAS CAROLING CAN CONK OUT YOUR VOCAL CHORDS

HOUSTON (Wireless Flash) – Athletes aren’t the only ones who need to warm-up – so do Christmas carolers. That bummer note comes courtesy of Baylor College of Medicine’s otolaryngology professor Dr. Michael G. Stewart, who says excessive caroling can lead to laryngitis. Dr. Stewart says carols that contain high notes such as the Sleep in heavenly peace... part of “Silent Night” are particularly problematic because they force folks to sing out of their register. He says it’s important to warm-up your voice a few minutes before caroling by singing the scales. You should also start practicing singing “Jingle Bells” a few weeks beforehand to help your endurance during a night out a-caroling. However, if any notes are too high to handle he says just mouth the words – no one will notice.
