RESEARCHER: ‘BRITS MANIPULATE AMERICANS WITH THEIR ACCENTS’
PHILADELPHIA (Wireless Flash) – Americans may not be under British rule but they are suckers for the accent according to a British-born professor at Philadelphia University. Sociology professor Katharine Jones claims some silver-tongued Brits purposely use their accents to manipulate Americans. In her research, Jones says she found Brits who use their accents to talk their way out of traffic tickets and into better apartments. They also fare amazingly well at singles bars because Yanks are so ga-ga for the English accents. Jones fully details how the English use their accents to royally take advantage of Americans in her new book, Accent on Privilege: English Identities and Anglophilia in the U.S. (Temple University Press).
