THE LONG AND JIGGLY HISTORY OF JELL-O

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. (Wireless Flash) – There’s a long and jiggly history behind JELL-O. That’s according to syndicated food columnist Carolyn Wyman, who is the author of the new book, JELL-O: A Biography (Harcourt). She says before JELL-O came along at the turn of the last century, gelatin was considered a delicacy for the rich because it took a staff of servants a full day to prepare the stuff. Wyman says, at that time, gelatin molds were a status symbol akin to a Lexus today. But she claims JELL-O “democratized gelatin” by making the jelly- like dessert easy and quick to make. Wyman also says over the years, folks have come up with some unusual uses for JELL-O – including sprinkling it in shoes and kitty litter to combat odors.
