‘SNOW WHITE’S’ DOPEY ALMOST NEVER WAS

LOS ANGELES (Wireless Flash) – It may sound dopey, but Disney animators tried to sway Walt Disney from naming the silent dwarf “Dopey” in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. The animated classic will be released on DVD next Tuesday (Oct. 9) and, according to Disney historian Stephen Schochet, animators brought up the point that kids may think Dopey was on dope. However, Schochet claims Walt was known for making up tall tales and told the artists he read the name in a William Shakespeare play and if it’s good enough for Shakespeare, it’s good enough for him. Of course there was no Dopey character in any Shakespeare play, but it didn’t matter: In the end Walt had his way, says Schochet.
