WINNIE-THE-POOH TURNS 75

NEW YORK (Wireless Flash) – He may not look it, but Winnie-the- Pooh is about to turn 75. The first book about the tubby little talking bear, titled Winnie-the- Pooh, made its debut on October 14, 1926, and went on to sell 150,000 copies in the U.S. alone by the end of the year. Stephanie Owens Lurie – the U.S. publisher of Pooh for Dutton Children’s Books – says its amazing the books were published at all because author A.A. Milne was primarily a mystery writer for adults. She says the last thing Milne’s publishers wanted from him was a children’s book because kids’ literature isn’t seen as a big money maker by book bigwigs. Of course, they were proved wrong by the success of the books, which have been in print continuously for the past 75 years. Dutton Children’s Books plans to celebrate the Pooh bear anniversary with a birthday party on October 15 in New York City.
