GULF WAR VETERANS PLAGUED BY ZITS

ANAHEIM, Calif. (Wireless Flash) – The so-called “Gulf War Syndrome” isn’t the only problem veterans have to deal with – acne can be a problem, too. California dermatologist John H. Bocachica says Gulf War veterans are prone to skin conditions like “tropical acne” which may be caused by their time spent overseas. He says 11 years after the conflict dermatologists are still treating veterans for the condition – which shows up as large, inflamed nodules on the body and buttocks. Besides tropical acne, soldiers who fought in the Gulf also have increased cases of fungal infections, inflamed hair follicles and scaling of the skin. Although these conditions are treatable, Dr. Bocachica says many of them can lie dormant for years without being detected. He recently shared his research at the American Academy of Dermatology’s summer meeting in Anaheim, California.
