THE DANGERS OF FLY-FISHING

DURHAM, N.C. (Wireless Flash) – Fish aren’t the only victims of fly- fishing – new research reveals fishing hobbyists are prone to all sorts of bone-crushing maladies. A Duke University Medical Center orthopedic surgeon polled 131 fly-fishing enthusiasts and discovered 69 percent suffer back pain, 25 percent have wrist, shoulder, or knee troubles and 18 percent experience elbow pain. Dr. Keith Berend – who is an avid fly-fisherman himself – attributes the aches and pains to the sport’s repetitive motions, but some fishing enthusiasts hurt themselves by loading their vests with too much gear. To prevent “fly-fishing elbow” and other problems, Dr. Berend recommends fishing fans stretch their muscles before they start casting.
