SOME MENOPAUSAL WOMEN CAN’T CRY

HOUSTON (Wireless Flash) – Mood swings and hot flashes are no picnic, but some menopausal women won’t shed a tear over them. Researchers say some women are physically incapable of crying thanks to a bizarre menopausal side effect known as “dry eye.” Baylor College of Medicine ophthalmologist Dr. Stephen Pflugfelder says in extreme cases of dry eye some women feel as if they have grains of sand in their eyes. Other cases are so severe the women have to stay inside dimly-lit rooms and avoid air drafts, which can be painful. Dr. Pflugfelder says special eye drops can reduce the eyeball inflammation, and he’s currently testing the drug, cyclosporin, as part of a clinical trial.
