SAVE OUR TIKI BARS!

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (Wireless Flash) – Tiki bars may finally get their architectural due if a historian in San Diego has his way. It seems “Polynesian Pop” architecture of fake grass huts and tiki torches is 50 years old and historian Alex Bevil wants to honor the anniversary by building interest in the style. “Tikitecture” was most popular in southern California, but Bevil says there are tiki-style buildings as far away as Ohio. The style isn’t just for fake South Sea saloons. San Diego alone has tiki tract homes, a tiki church, and even a tiki auto repair shop. The “Polynesian Pop” style faded out around 1972 and Bevil says, since then, many classic tiki buildings have been torn down. He says it takes 50 years for a new style to be appreciated and he hopes to keep tiki buildings preserved for future generations before it’s too late.
