‘FAMILY LAW’ STAR GETS POSSESSED BY YANKEE SPORTSCASTER

LOS ANGELES (Wireless Flash) – Looks like Family Law actor Christopher McDonald is willing to do strange things for art – even let himself be possessed by the spirit of a dead baseball announcer. That’s what McDonald did when he portrayed Yankee broadcaster Mel Allen for the upcoming HBO movie, 61, about Roger Maris’ 1961 quest for the home run crown. McDonald says he worked hard to reproduce Allen’s folksy drawl, but says the real acting challenge was acting surprised about games when he already knew the outcome Although director Billy Crystal helped matters along by forcing the actors to improvise their play-by-play, McDonald says he forgot what he was doing at one point and Mel’s spirit just took over. In the words of Allen, “How ’bout that?” 61 debuts April 28 on HBO.
