ARTIST INSPIRED BY SNACK FOODS

PHILADELPHIA (Wireless Flash) – Art may be in the eye of the beholder but for one woman, it’s in her stomach. Philadelphia artist Jan Elmy is fascinated with Tastykakes – those inexpensive, mass-produced bakery items – and she’s created several pieces of art dedicated to the cheapie treats. Elmy has created four pastry paintings including one titled “Kandykakes Go Way Out West” which was inspired by a real company slogan. She says she likes it because “Way Out West” is also the name of her boyfriend’s country band. The painting – which recently sold for $5,800 – features a Tastycake snack cake sitting next to an enamel coffee pot, mug and a pair of spurs. Her other pastry paintings are priced as much as $48,000. The snack cake exhibit will appear at Phildelphia’s Rittenhouse Fine Art gallery through June 10
