GROCERY STORE CHAIN BAGGED FOR TERMINATING TRANSVESTITE

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (Wireless Flash) -- The one-year anniversary of the firing of a transvestite truck driver may be bad news for a major grocery chain. On January 5, 2000, the Winn Dixie grocery chain fired a truck driver named Peter Oiler because he occasionally wore ladies clothing while off-duty. As a result, Oiler and wife, Shirley, lost their health insurance coverage and almost lost their home. Now the American Civil Liberties Union wants to draw attention to the anniversary by having consumers telephone Winn Dixie's corporate headquarters in Jacksonville, Florida, today and complain to company president Al Rowland. ACLU spokesman Eric Ferraro says he hopes the flood of phone calls will force Winn Dixie to change its policy against cross-dressing employees.
