TEXAS LEADING THE NATION IN SCHOOL SPANKINGS

COLUMBUS, Ohio (Wireless Flash) -- They do everything bigger in Texas -- even school spankings. According to statistics compiled by the Center For Effective Discipline, Texas beats all other states when it comes to school paddlings. During the 1997-98 school year, Texas teachers forced more than 81,000 children to bend over, grab their ankles and get whacked on their behinds with an inch-thick wooden paddle. Mississippi students are also getting their share of smacks: Almost 50,000 students were paddled in the same time period. By comparison, Colorado reported no spankings and Idaho only had 17. A spokeswoman for the anti-spanking group says kids are being whacked for everything from chewing gum to talking in the halls.
