BODYBUILDERS' DIETS PUMP UP INTESTINAL GAS

TUCSON (Wireless Flash) -- Bodybuilders who eat lots of protein bars may be pumping up more than just their muscles - - they could be giving their guts a gassy workout too. That's according to nutritional consultant Margot Parker of herbalfortress.com, who says many weightlifter's diets are filled with flatulence-producing foods. Muscle-building protein bars are particularly guilty of causing gas attacks because they contain high levels of sugar that cause fermentation in the gut. Protein shakes aren't much better: Parker says they'll cause flatulence in folks who are even slightly lactose intolerant. She also says gym rats who gobble their food in order to get on with their workout may swallow air that is later released in the form of flatulence.
