SINGER JAMES DARREN SAYS GOODBYE TO FORMER HITS

LOS ANGELES (Wireless Flash) -- Some entertainers don't mind singing their hits but former teen idol James Darren isn't one of them. Darren's biggest hits were early 1960s teen ballads like "Goodbye Cruel World" and "Her Royal Majesty," but he says hasn't sung those songs in 25 years. The 64-year-old singer doesn't mind those songs but says they remind him of a time when others were guiding his career and didn't allow him to sing the standards he loved. Ever since Darren played a holographic lounge singer on the sci-fi show "Deep Space Nine," he's been in demand on the nightclub circuit and is singing the saloon songs he wasn't allowed to record during his "Gidget" days. But he's not turning his back on the movie that made him famous. "Gidget's" title song is the only hit he still performs in concert. Darren's latest CD is "This One's From The Heart."
