IT'S SINK OR SWIM AT CONCRETE CANOE RACE

GOLDEN, Colo. (Wireless Flash) -- Here's an idea that should go over like a lead balloon: a concrete canoe race. This weekend (Jun. 24-26), 26 teams of engineering students will gather in Golden, Colorado, to race in homemade concrete canoes in an annual contest sponsored by the American Society of Civil Engineers. Although concrete boats don't normally float, the students have buoyed up the concrete by adding balloons or glass beads to the mix. All of the boats are tested to make sure they float before the race -- but, even so, a spokeswoman admits some boats wind up sinking midway through the race. The winner will receive $9000 in scholarship money.
