WHATEVER HAPPENED TO BO DONALDSON?

LOS ANGELES (Wireless Flash) -- Remember the 1974 hit song "Billy, Don't Be A Hero"? This year marks the 25th anniversary of Bo Donaldson and the Heywoods only No. 1 hit. Although the band briefly attempted a career in country music a few years ago, not much has been heard from the Heywoods. These day the bandmembers spend most of their time touring the state fair circuit singing "Billy, Don't Be A Hero" to baby boomers. Donaldson says he hated "Billy" when he heard the original version by Paper Lace, but he recorded it only after his mother - - who was also the band's manager -- insisted it would be a hit. Some folks interpreted the song to be a protest against the Vietnam War, but Donaldson says the song was actually protesting the Civil War. The group plans on officially celebrating the 25th anniversary of "Billy, Don't Be A Hero" at the Rhino RetroFest, a pop culture festival taking place August 13 thru 15 in Los Angeles.
