GAS GUZZLERS SAFER THAN SMALL CARS?

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Wireless Flash) -- A new report reveals that fuel-saving automobiles may be responsible for almost 4,500 deaths each year. The study conducted by the Washington-based Competitive Enterprise Institute claims tough fuel economy standards established in 1979 forced car manufacturers to build lighter and smaller cars that are more vulnerable to crashes. It's estimated as many as 4,500 deaths each year are directly caused by automobiles poorly designed to meet government fuel economy standards. A spokesperson for the institute says consumers are now rejecting shrimpy cars in favor of roomier -- and supposedly safer -- vehicles. However, not everyone agrees with the study's findings. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration claims the annual number of auto deaths in America has decreased by 10,000 since the fuel economy standards were implemented.
