IS YOUR TEACHER HYPNOTIC -- OR JUST BORING?

RANCHO PALOS VERDES, Calif. (Wireless Flash) -- Ever wonder why so many students get very, very sleepy in class? It turns out their teachers are hypnotizing them. That's according to Shelley Stockwell of the Global Hypnosis Federation, who says school teachers often use the same techniques hypnotists use to put their patients in a trance. Stockwell says monotone teachers who drone on and on like the one in "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" hypnotize their students and can unknowingly make students forget about the topic completely. Other teaching techniques that may inadvertently put students into a "boredom trance," include jangling pocket change and pacing back and forth in front of the chalkboard, which has the same effect as a monotone voice. However, not all classroom hypnosis is bad: Stockwell says some teachers successfully hypnotize their students into learning by using colorful words and phrases, making eye contact and varying the pitch of their voice.
