THE STORY BEHIND ELVIS AND BLACK VELVET

THE STORY BEHIND ELVIS AND BLACK VELVET

ENCINO, Calif. (Wireless Flash) -- Every wonder how Elvis Presley became associated with black velvet? Longtime Hollywood writer/director Hal Kanter has an idea. The 81-year-old Kanter wrote and directed Elvis' first movie, "Loving You," and it was during that time that he gave Elvis a black velvet sport shirt. Kanter says he was visiting Elvis in Shreveport, Louisiana, just before filming started, and had just bought two velvet sport shirts: one red and one velvet. Elvis kept admiring the black one so much that Kanter took the shirt right off his back and told Presley he could have it. Weeks later, Elvis reported to Kanter's office at Paramount wearing the very same black velvet shirt. Kanter has just published his autobiography, "So Far, So Funny: My Life In Show Business" (McFarland).
