SUN EXPOSURE NOT FACTOR IN MOST DANGEROUS SKIN CANCER

SUN EXPOSURE NOT FACTOR IN MOST DANGEROUS SKIN CANCER

BRIGHTON, Australia (Wireless Flash) -- All that sunscreen you'll slather on this summer may be a waste of money if a new study out of Australia is correct. The research shows that exposure to sunlight isn't a factor in the development of melanoma -- the most dangerous type of skin cancer. The findings come from 83-year-old physician Allen J. Christophers who says he's convinced the sun doesn't cause the dangerous cancer because 78 percent of melanomas grow on body parts not usually exposed to the sun. Christophers says other statistics also show that sun-lovers are at no greater risk of getting melanoma than people who avoid the sun. However, Dr. Darrell Rigel of the American Association of Dermatologists says he's skeptical about Dr. Christopher's research because most other studies contradict his findings.
