SNUFFING OUT THE MYTH ABOUT SNUFF FILMS

AMHERST, New York (Wireless Flash) -- A new report about so- called "snuff films" may finally snuff any rumors that the snuff films feature real deaths. Although movies like Nicolas Cage's recent "8mm", hint that snuff films are real, researchers at "Skeptical Inquirer" magazine claim there is no evidence that any authentic snuff films exist. Snuff film historian Scott Stine says the myth started in 1971, when film promoters working on a cheesy Argentine slasher flick called "Slaughter" decided to spice up its appeal by renaming it "Snuff" and creating ads that hinted that the film documented a real murder. Although "Snuff" was bogus, the film made a quick profit and Stine says the media immediately accepted the "snuff film" myth without bothering to check any facts. Even though the film's producers have since admitted it was all a hoax, the legend won't die and "snuff film" rumors still run rampant as far away as Japan.
