BARBIE'S LEGS GIVING FINGERS TO AMPUTEES

DURHAM, N.C. (Wireless Flash) -- The Barbie doll is giving a leg- up to some amputees -- literally. A prosthetics specialist at Duke University Medical Center is converting Barbie doll legs into realistic-looking fake fingers for amputees. According to Jane Bahor (bay-ER), the flexible joint in Barbie's legs make them perfect substitute fingers because they can bend -- something previous prosthetic fingers couldn't do. Bahor creates the Barbie leg finger replacements by removing a leg from a doll and then placing it inside a flesh-colored silicon glove. Amputees then bend the joint by using an attached pull-cord. So far, about 12 patients have received the new Barbie finger transplants.
